In Contacts List view

When I type in my name [Peter Canny] into the 'filter' area, another name ends up highlighted [Peter Hancock] See attached.....

Ive tried this with a number of names and the common behaviour is that once the first name has been highlighted [as you type in Peter], it sticks there, even though you type in further information ~ in this case the surname.

We are aware of some minor tweaks in the lookup behavior.

However, I'm not sure if you're aware, but the lookup field is not smarter. You can search by First or Last Name regardless of the sort you've chosen.

Try typing in Canny and see what you get.

Add a user configurable setting which
1. Controls/sets a time lag between when one starts typing into the filter and when it starts its lookup.
2. Adds the ability to turn off the auto lookup completely
3. Adds a button next to the filter to instantly Clear the filter

I have over 10,000 contacts spread out over 6 contact folders in my .pst file. When I type something into the Filter, it is very slow. What is worse is that if I make a typo, I am stuck waiting with Outlook locked up while the filter searches for a non existent string.

I need the ability to turn auto search off and be able to manually say when to start searching. Even when I attempt to delete a string in the filter, no matter how quickly I backspace, the filter methodically searches for any possible match resulting from each backspace.

thanks Michael. Typing in Canny brings up all the relatives. Which includes me.

Now [in b1379] there is no highlight. So the wrong name is no longer highlighted; which tehnically closes this thread I guess, so I'll start another one to mention what I say below.

That is certainly different, but still not what I want.
That is ~ either

to type in a name, like Peter Canny and the correct name be highlighted so that i can hit enter and then edit or see more details. OR
to type in a name, like Peter Canny, be able to tab through what comes up and then hit enter and then edit or see more details.

Hi there

I've since discovered that the behaviour still occurs, however can add a little more info.


Open AGWPDE [including b1381]
Go in to contacts ~ you will be provided a clean list with nothing highlighted.
Type a name into the filter section [for example 'Peter'] and the list below will include all people called peter AND surnames like Petersen etc.
Select the one you are interested in and it will be higlighted.
Hitting ENter at this stage will bring up the edit box for that contact
at this stage if you scroll around the different tabs etc you can see all contacts, and the highlighted on remains highlighted
Select the ALL tab for contacts again and type in another filter examples. Say Lee.
Immediately a random Lee is highlighted. I say random because it is not someone whos first name is Lee in my case ~ say Lee Ray, rather Sharon Lee, right at the bottom of my list is highlighted. {I sort by First Last [Company]}
One of the points I'm making is that once a name has been highlighted ~ there is always a name highlighted for that session of ADWPDE
