VISTA install problem

I installed the new Billrate to my VISTA desktop before seeing the requirement to copy the .dat file to the documents folder before installing the application. I did not see my data, from the old version, so I copied the .dat file to the documents folder and still do not see the data. Must I uninstall the application, copy the.dat file and then reinstall to have it get my data? Do I have to make a "MY Documents" folder or does the app know that VISTA calls the old "My Documents" folder just "Documents"?
