View Full Version : Syncing iPod Touch (iPhone?) with Agendus desktop

Having made the decision to replace my aging Palm TX with an iPod Touch I have been looking for solutions to have much of the same software and facilities I enjoyed with the Palm. There is no sign of a TX replacement from Palm so until the Palm Pre is genuinely available I'll stick with the iPod.

The most important thing to sort out was synchronisation of PIM data, preferably with Agendus Desktop (Windows for Palm). There are 2 essential links which make this possible. A Google mail account and Companionlink for Google http://www.companionlink.com/products/companionlinkforgoogle.html (I have no shares in Companionlink).

Once you have a Google mail account with calendar setup you may want to add the public holidays calendar of your choice. Since the Google Exchange sync only supports 5 calendars that will leave 4 calendars including the main calendar for Calendar categories. You could rename your principal calendar in Google to your main calendar category in your Palm + create 3 more of the most used categories on Palm Desktop/Agendus with the same names.

Configure your iPod Touch (iPhone probably works the same!) as in this help article http://www.google.com/support/mobile/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=138740 to enable Exchange syncronisation with Google Calendar and contacts. Make sure you have this account on your iPod set to "push" if you want seamless updating.

You may need to go to m.google.com again on the iPod to make sure any new calendars in the Exchange part are included so they sync with your iPod/Phone.

Now on the Palm Desktop side (through Agendus) you either should reduce your calendars to 4 categories or accept that the other categories will not sync.

Install Companionlink and follow their instructions to configure. This software supports many other targets including Outlook so Agendus for Outlook should work fine. I have set the Auto Synchronisation to once every 2 hours which should be OK.

If you have some data already on your Google account it is best to force a fresh upload of data from your Desktop. Use the purge and reload feature in Companionlink setup for the first sync to Google.

These are the main points to get this working for most users. I've skipped over some of the detail which should be fairly obvious.

Now I can add a calendar or contact item in Agendus or on the iPod and the item appears "like magic!" in the other device and on Google.

Now we are just waiting for the Agendus for iPod and iPhone to pull the iPod user end together as it did for the Palm .

Maybe Iambic should do a deal and incorporate Companionlink in their solution for "Over the Air" synchronisation!

If that was not enough!

I have the data show up in Thunderbird using the Lightning plugin for calendar and another new plugin gContactSync for contacts. gContactSync is still a development version but seems to work for me. Some more testing is required to be sure it does the right thing. Now all my Windows/OSX/Linux PCs are synced to Agendus Desktop and with each other.

So here we have "over the air" sync of Thunderbird with Agendus Desktop as the source. Of course we could do none of this without Google.

For now lets trust that they can be trusted with our data!!

And a hearty "thanks" to all the open source folks who have made this all possible > An Outlook free desktop!

You have described exactly what we started doing some time ago in this thread (http://support.iambic.com/forum/showthread.php?t=37374&highlight=companionlink) as well as what I wrote up here (http://justanothergeeksite.com/wordpress/2009/03/dumping-outlook-returning-to-the-palm-desktop/).

gContactSync sounds like another great solution to add to the mix!

Yes this can surely also work for Windows mobile which has Exchange sync built in, as your thread shows!

1 more solution which also brings my basic SonyEricsson phone into this sync with Google is MyPhoneExplorer from http://www.fjsoft.at/en/ also a low cost (DonateWare) solution. Again assuring "Over the Air" Agendus to Phone sync.

Now we are just waiting for the Agendus for iPod and iPhone to pull the iPod user end together as it did for the Palm.

Happy waiting, if it is for calendar. You'll get it only if and when Apple will grant access to its native calendar (dixit Adriano). Which could mean in some years or never.

If Apple fail to deliver and the Palm-Pre does not please us then we will all be using Android.

How's the Agendus for Android shaping up Adriano? The HTC Magic (Android OS) looks like a nice device to run it on!
