View Full Version : What's the purpose of weather inside AGiPH?

I have a question that has been nagging at me during the times that I have used AGiPH so far. What is the purpose of having the weather integrated into the app? It just seems to take up room. We are already forced to keep the built-in weather app (based on Yahoo!) and most of us have either the Weather Channel, WeatherBug, or some other forecasting app on the first page of the phone.
I'm just wondering where it fits in this version. When we finally have calendaring, adding an icon to indicate weather would be nice in some of the views. But, just adding a drop-down window that lists the weather for the next ten days seems like an uneeded tag-along from other versions of the program.
Also, with the connectivity of the iPhone (and even the iPod Touch), it should auto-update, since we all have to have unlimited data, at least in the US. If you need to limit data usage because of your provider where you live, the ability to turn off auto-updates should be an option on the preferences screen. But, from what I've heard and seen, very few programs try to limit their data usage, so why not have it kept up-to-date automatically?
I can see how the fact and quote might be a useful tidbit for those who like it (as long as we can turn it off like we can now), but the weather doesn't seem useful until we get multiple views in place. I'm not saying that it won't be a nice little touch then when we're looking for Agendus for planning the next few weeks at one time (or looking at a today view with the weather as a part of that display), but until then, it seems like it was just put in because it's part of most of the other platform versions.
I'm not trying to make a big deal out of it, but I just had to say something. It just doesn't make sense right now. Does anyone else feel the same way, or once again, am I off my rocker :weird:? This was one of those things I just had to mention since it was buggin' me to everytime I booted into AGiPH.
Oh, and another feature request, when you re-enter the app, it should be on the same screen as when you left. It ahould also be possible to set up a default home screen for when you open the app (which will be important when more calendar views are included), but until then, it should open on the same screen as when you exited. I think on the Palm it let's you pick the home screen for when you run the app (or you can just let it be where it was when you left). I can't remember and I don't have my Palm around.
Where is that thing?!?! That's a problem...I've gotta find it. It needs the darn Find Me app that is part of MobileMe now. I wish you could get that functionality without having to subscribe to MobileMe. Or, be able to subscribe when you have a need for it (like when you lose your iPhone), but since it requires setting an option on the iPhone itself, you have to be prepared in advance and just can't subscribe to MobileMe once you've lost the darn thing. I just can't justify a MobileMe subscription, especially since I don't have a Mac, but I'd love that feature. iambic, any ideas of a plan to get Apple to approve that app?!? :bulb:

Yeah, drop the weather forecast! We all have better specific apps for weather forecast in our region (I'm from germany for example and the Agendus weather doesn't work for me altogether).
Agendus Should be Calendar, Contacts, Tasks and Notes. Clear and clean!

P.S. Or at least make it an option to turn on or off

I agree with Sulley:
In general (when watching: TV or Web or listening to radio) When is the forecast right ? Only when it states the obvious.
Agree with Alphacodex. There are specific apps if you really want to check wheather (Accuwheather, Wheather channel ...)
Having the Wheather Forecast and fact and quote on the Home View have made me make it the un default view. I dont go there any more it is too cramp with things I dont need. It should be configurable, mentioned by Sulley as well
I trust you guys. I'm sure you will build a better new versions. For the other members keep demanding in a constructive way.

When you mention "turn it off", are you referring to simply minimizing? I would like to take it completely off the Today view if possible. I just installed Agendus for the iPhone and was taken by surprise that there was no calendaring available... Still cannot get over that... or perhaps I am missing something.... sure cannot find it.
Agendus, as it stands now, is completely useless to me without the ability to show appointments. Hopefully that will be included in future versions.:(

You can completely remove the weather, history fact, and quote for the day from the today page in v1.0. It doesn't even show up as a drop-down (or whatever you'd like to call it). I am assuming that will not change, so you'll be in good shape! :)

Hi Jim and others. Thanks for the feedback. I do see where you guys are coming from on the weather...there are better ways of getting weather forecasts. The theory is to not have to leave the app to get the weather.
Codex, what city in Germany are you in (close to)...it should work.
As Jim said, you can turn off every one of the Today slots by tapping on the double arrow at the top left of the view, once in the next dialog, tap on the slot labels to remove the checkbox.
Now to attempt addressing the opinion to dump the weather in favor of other "true" PIM features. That's not going to happen. Retrieving OTA weather is much, much easier that implementing calendaring facilities (especially on the iPhone). That said...we stll WILL add calendaring. In fact it our top-most priority, second only to stability issues introduced with OS 3.0.
Also auto-update will come.

Sully, I cannot seem to find a way to remove those items through the preferences. Exactly how do you remove them?
Thanks,

Michael, I've done as you mentioned, but I see no checkboxes to begin with, which partially explains why tapping on the slot labels makes no difference. I am using the 3GS model if that makes any difference.

Actually, I'm with you, Nick. I can re-order them to my heart's delight, but I see no way to remove them. Michael, could this be another 3.0 bug?

The cells don't actually get removed. Do you not have green check marks on each cell representing the slots?

Michael,
I hadn't been back into the double-arrows in the upper-left corner to set this since the 3.0 update. There are no green arrows like there were before. It has kept the settings that were there previously (e.g. I had turned off the history fact & quotation) and they don't appear on the Today View. All that is there is a list of the items and sliders to move their position on the screen.
Green arrows have gone bye-bye.
Sorry about the extra bug! :weird:

No, I have no green check marks. Remember I've been on the 3.0 update since my original beta installation of Agendus.

Michael,
One other bug, which I know is off-topic for this thread, deals with the lack of ability to add contacts to a task. I don't know if I reported this when I tried to add a contact, but once you try to add one, the function bar across the bottom disappears and you stay on the screen you were on. I just wanted to make sure that I reported that bug completely.
Also, going back to the double-arrows for what appears on the Today View for a second, I wanted to reiterate a comment I made via the in-app reporting system. I would think that what appears on the Today View (e.g. weather, quote, etc.) should be part of the preferences, rather than on the screen itself. When I was first using the app, I kept hitting that button over and over wondering what it was for. That's just an idea, but I think it would add consistency to the interface. Keep that kind of stuff inside of the preferences.
Thanks!

I agree with Sulley. Weather was nice for Palm, but not for Iphone. We have many Apps for this with better presentation. In Fact the presentation of the Apps at the Iphone is very important, because Iphone has a Beautiful interface and beautiful hardware. Iambic have to focus at calendar, contacts, calls, records, notes, notification, reminders and other thing with relation with Agendus. This is my 2 cents.

That's strange, because we can see them on two different OS 3.0 devices. Maybe it's an issue with the 1.0 version.

hmmm perhaps is a version 1.0 issue... I've abandoned 1.0 since 3 weeks now. In 1.02 (on OS 3.0) works like a charm. And unfortunately for you... good luck in getting 1.02... might be a month from now (headbang).

Michael,
Just going off what you said, Alli. Maybe this was something that stopped working in a late beta OS release (or possibly the GM release), since it worked fine running on the 2.2.1 OS release on my iPhone?
It had to have stopped working when I installed the 3.0 OS release, since I haven't been back into that function since I installed 3.0.

And yes, the not being able to add contacts from task has been reported and will be included in another update.
Lordy I miss the days when you could just d/l a quick fix from a developer site. Oh Apple-why are you making this so hard on everyone!

Alli,
I was just making sure that Michael knew that, when you try to add a contact, it also causes the Task Bar across the bottom to disappear. I was ensuring that this part of the issue had been reported and was being addressed. I knew that not being able to add a contact to a task was known.
And, yes, this is getting rediculous with the delays in release times from Apple on the App Store. I'd love to login to MyIambic and just click on the product and download the darn file. There are two working versions that users can't get to right now...v1.01 and v1.02. This is very, very frustrating, but is a reality when dealing with the iPhone platform. You've got Apple as a middle-man.

Yeah ist stupid that it take so long, but on the other hand I like the concept of having all apps together in one central spot, with a search engine, very low danger for viruses and so on.
I believe (hope?) that the actual delays come from all the developers sending in updated versions of their apps for OS3.0
Some of my other Apps did already show me an update for OS3.0, so I hope Agendus will follow soon...

short and sweet on the "what's the purpose of the weather in Agendus": simple -- when I'm in agendus and I just want to take a quick look at what's going on tomorrow out the door, rather than having to go to the (amazingly powerful) weatherbug and then come back to Agendus (two screens away on my iPhone) to continue doing what I was doing, I just go today view, glance, and back to the contact list of wherever I was before.
And yeah naturally small weather forecast indicators will be plastered across the calendar views... that way I can even save myself the trouble to have to go to the today view.
I'm using the first person above just because that's me how I use the app, and why I wanted to get the weather (and other stuff) in, some of which might seem off. Well perhaps to someone, for me that makes perfect sense having it the place it is, in that specific corner, etc. As I mentioned often around here, we ourselves are the first users of our apps, in addition to being directly involved in their creation.

Michael thanks
Now when I tap on the double arrow it takes me to a second screen title Order Setting which only allows me to re arrange the sequence but no check box shown.
By the way I'm using it on an ipod touch 1st Gen..
Thanks in advance

That's a nice concept, but it also doesn't work in other areas, like making a phone-call (it will quit Agendus) or writing an eMail (it will also quit Agendus). As long as Agendus remembers where i was when I left the app going out and coming back will anyways be a common procedure.
But well, if I can switch it off, i don't really care. I just hope you dont put to much time in such minor features, I dare to say that there are more important things to implement right now...

Actually Sulley, you don't have to have a Mac to be a subscriber to MobileMe. I am a MobileMe subscriber and MobileMe syncs my Outlook calendar OTA with the Apple iPhone calendar. Is MobileMe worth the $99 annual fee, probably not for some, fo me it was when I signed up. At that time, it was difficult to access MSN email through any cell phone pr PDA since it is not a Pop3 or Imap email protocol. I had a Windows Mobile phone before the iPhone and couldn't access my MSN or Hotmail accounts and MSN, Hotmail, and Windows Mobile are all Microsoft products. Yet, I get the iPhone and with MobileMe I'm able to get my msn mail. Go figure. Mobile Me also gives you a new email address which I am considering transfering everything to since at $99 a year compared to $120 a year for MSN. The only issue though is I've had that MSN mail address since the mid 90's and it will be hard to get away from it.
MobileMe also gives you an iDisk that you can access from any computerso now your documents or pictures loaded to the iDisk can be wherever you have access to MobileMe. It really is a great service
