View Full Version : "Rolling" To-Do's

I have been using a third party app by Brekke Research called ToDoRoll to migrate non-completed ToDo's to the current day. I would LOVE to see this added as a feature in AN. I imagine that it could be set via the Preferences tab and could even "automatically" roll DATED non-completed ToDo's. To go even further, I'd like to define the roll criteria by category! Whew....

I agree. This is a good feature.

Thanks for the feedback, can you clarify this feature request further please.

I don't quite understand the need for a to do date changing feature, can you explain the benefit this would have? You want a to do with the due date of yesterday now to have a due date of today automatically, correct?

If you are interested in tracking the date something was originally due then the default current functionality works fine as the date is not changed and uncompleted to dos show until completed.

If you are interested in knowing what day it was completed you can turn on the to do setting for "record completion date" which will change the due date to the completion date when it is marked completed.

All uncompleted to dos (both dated and undated) appear in ActionNames.

Maybe I didn't explain clearly, I'll try again. What I use ToDoRoll for is to manually "roll forward" non-completed and dated ToDo items. I have it configured to not roll completed items.

I'd like to have this feature built-in to AN and automated to perform the task at a specific time. (Similar to the way BackupBuddy VFS automatically backs-up to my MMC card at midnight every night.)

I'd even like to go a step further and be able to specify which category(s) that have the ToDo items rolled forward. I'm imagining that project tasks would be but Honey-Do's wouldn't. :p

The reason for this is that I manage multiple projects that are geographically dispursed. (At one point last year I had projects in Charlotte, Chicago, Indianapolis and Peoria at the same time.) I create a category for each project specific ToDo's.

IMHO, the logical place for this is as an additional Preference similar to "To do Defaults" and "To do Settings". Something along the lines of "To do Rolling"?

One further thing.....

The reason for the automated rolling feature is to ensure that no To Do's slip through the cracks.

Thanks for the explanation, the multiple city example makes sense. One way to do this with existing versions is to make categories for each of these cities then filter by category. ActionNames has the ability to filter by multiple categories see the Filter icon | To Dos | category selector.

I agree with these posts. especially since the Brekke research ToDoRoll does not and wil not support 5.0 in Palm OS. Can we expect the rollover in a future version?

Forgive my thickheadedness, but I still don't understand the value of this feature. All overdue ToDos are visible in Agendus - at least in Split and List view for Today. It would be nice to have the option of showing both overdue and current ToDos both visible in the same (Due Today) ToDo View, but this has been requested before. Am I missing something that would make rolling over ToDos particularly valuable?

TIA,
Gordon

Here is how it would work for me:

November 12 I have various ToDo's that I have put are due today, perhaps 12-15 items. I get to only maybe 5 items on November 12.

On November 13, I need to go into Agendus, and manually put each item to now be due on November 13.

Ok, I might have an answer to my problem. I was not looking at Agendus the right way. Agendus only puts ToDo's in for the date of which you want them due, or if you have them in for an advance notice. My old task list just put all the ToDo's in regardless of when they were due.

I just changed the sort order to priority, then date due. Now my overdue items show first for each priority. I was getting hung up on seeing all of my overdue items in the list first, because my sort order was due date first. All I needed to do was change the sort order.

I think I am set now.

Thanks for making me think about this!

Hi,

There might be a need to change the date of a ToDo. My view is as follow :

- If the due date is not important, I don't specify any. This means that I have no need of an automatic mechanism.

- If I need to change the due date, there are two cases :
i) I want to keep track of the initial due date : then I need a "postpone" menu that (1) logs the initial due date as a note and (2) change the due date.
ii) I do not want to keep the initial date : then I use the current mechanism.

- If I need to change the due date of a set of ToDo's :
Then then issue is not so simple. There may be many cases :
i) All ToDo's have the same due date and I want to move all of them to a same new due date : something based on categories or filtering mechanisms could be useful.
ii) ToDo's have different due dates, and I want to shift all my "project" (a category) of x days : possible, but becomes more complex (may needs a manual check for all todo's that would then have a due date over the week-end, for instance: not easy for business!).

...more comments might come !

This is just to say that implementation might not be very simple, and that a clear description of the user operations and menus is needed first.

count me in on this request!!!!! i hate the way Agendus handles overdue todos. It wasnt a problem until "todoroll" didnt work on my new ux-50.

I would request the SIMPLE option in Agendus prefs to : "Only show overdue and undated tasks on TODAYS date." (not everyday for the next 200 years)

this would solve all my problems with the current system. (and i wouldnt need "todoroll" anymore.

Why??? well here goes.

1 if i am looking at dates other than today... my many overdue todos make it a cluttered mess. finding things is very hard. setting prefs to show undated last screws up my today view...where i need to get the oldest done first.

2. on my ux... if i have more todos than can fit on the screen... i cant use the jog dial to get to the next day. its bad enough i cant do it for todays date... but even worse on everyday. (going from Sat to Sun is a joke without using the jog wheel... but thats a different thread)

3 using "todoroll" changes the duedate... and i need to know that. I love the way Agendus adds a "!" and puts the duedate in red. please dont change that. but please dont make me look at it on everyday of the calender. just on the current day (just like a todo thats dated today)

i have been requesting this for years... i would love to see it happen.

thank you

This has been available for yonks in DateBk5 aka "floating todos". It's one feature of DateBk5 which I rate highly. Wish Agendus could incorporate it. Of course I chose Agendus over DateBk 5 for the cleaner interface (and responsive programmers hint hint ;) )

I would also like this feature, partially because I sync with Lotus Notes and it does not roll ToDos forward. I can see them fine in Agendus but if they get rolled forward then they'll continue to show on the current date on my Notes calendar.

maybe we are barking up the wrong tree. should we be asking Brekke Research to update "ToDoRoll"?

doesnt look like Iambic sees this as a problem.

I sure do............
